Going Greek: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly.

It’s been a little over a year since I went alum from the greatest sorority on earth…but really, doesn’t everyone think that about their own sorority? I get a little bummed every now and then that I’m not standing in heels, in the blaring sun, practicing the gate song or learning numerous songs during the workshops because you can’t remember them from the year before. We’ve all been there right? Right.

When I went through recruitment I was absolutely terrified….seriously. The only knowledge I had about sororities was what I’d learned from Legally Blonde…I’m not kidding. Nobody went Greek in my hometown. That was mainly because everyone went to the college in our hometown, which was private, so no Greek Life. I’m not gunna lie, I got a lot of crap for joining(from hometown people) and still to this day a lot of people don’t understand it but I can proudly say more & more people from my hometown are going Greek!

So the purpose of this post is to help you decided if you should go Greek or not, help you decided what to wear, to let you know what recruitment is really like, and what it’s like after recruitment is said and done.

Why should you go Greek?

Because of all the amazing friends you make, duh! No but really, you will gain some pretty great friendships along the way. Honestly, one of the biggest things I took away from being Greek was confidence. I was always being pushed out of my comfort zone & it help me become a way stronger person. I can talk to strangers like they are my bestfriends or kill an interview and I truly believe it’s because of being in a sorority. Everyone has their own reasons whether it be because they are a legacy, want to have more friends, or already have friends that are Greek. The list goes on and on.

What should you wear on each day?

So if you don’t already know, recruitment is a process that lasts over a number of days. At WKU, recruitment includes 4 days then you have bid day. Each day is completely different. The first day they will give you a tshirt to wear and everyone will have the same one. As the days go your outfits should get dressier and dressier. I would definitely recommend dresses for Theme & Preference.

The Truth About Recruitment

For 95% of girls going through recruitment, they are scared out of their minds (I know I was). Just remember every single girl that you talk to is just as nervous, if not more nervous, than you are. In reality, it’s like speed dating. Sometimes the conversations are awesome and sometimes they are extremely awkward. Just because you have an awkward conversation doesn’t mean that sorority isn’t for you. Not everyone is alike in each sorority. I cannot even begin to tell you how different we all are.

What do you talk about? Anything & everything. Ask them anything you want to know (I mean keep it reasonable lol) but seriously we are there to answer all your questions.

Recruitment is in August and it’s so so hot each day so just be prepared. Don’t freak out about being sweaty because I promise we are probably sweating more than you. Usually you get to have a little bag you’ll keep with your group leader(called a Pi Chi). Put a travel size thing of deodorant in there along with gum/mints, makeup for touch ups, etc. I wish I had done that when I went through.

Recruitment is a MUTUAL SELECTION PROCRESS. In simple terms, a sorority will “choose” girls they would like to have but you have to choose them back. With that being said do not be devastate if you get cut. Chances are it’s for the best and you will find your home somewhere else. Everything happens for a reason and you have to remember that. Also, don’t drop recruitment just because you get cut. Take it day by day. In the end if you decide Greek Life isn’t for you then that’s okay but I promise every girl can get something out of being in a sorority whether they realize it or not.

DO NOT listen to sorority stereotypes. I’ll go ahead and ruin the fun for ya, they are false. Every sorority is so diverse. No two girls have the same personality and I think that is what makes it all so special. I use to look around the room and think gosh, these girls are so pretty & perfect. You will learn so much from so many girls.

Life After Recruitment

So for us, Sunday is bid day. The day you’ll have a thousand insane girls running towards you screaming and crying with happiness. You’ll be super confused and awkward but that perfectly fine. We expect nothing less. You’ll receive a bid day buddy, pal, etc to spend the whole day with. Usually the day is filled with games, crafts, food (the most important part, right?) and awkward ice breaker games that we all hate. I remember I didn’t have the greatest bid day buddy and she left me alone like 50% of the time but I survived. DO NOT quit the next day if this happens to you. Remember there are 100+ girls around trying to get to know each other. This day may go absolutely wonderful for you. If that’s the case, you’ll have your friend group in no time and you have already started the best 4 years of your life. If your not in that boat, don’t worry that was me, that is 100% ah-okay.

I’m going to be completely honest, I did not find the best group of girls who I now call my bestfriends until like my second year of college. Don’t let that freak you out lol. It happens. The whole first year I felt alone a lot of the time and really considered quitting. I think the big reason I pushed through and stayed active was because when I would look at the lives all my hometown friends were living (ones who did not join a sorority), I was sad. Don’t get me wrong, I love every single one of them till this day and they all have great lives but it wasn’t for me. I knew I wanted to make new friends, step out of my comfort zone, and not hangout with the same exact people from high school every day. So I stuck with it & I can honestly say it was the best 4 years I could have ever imagined.

Throughout your 4 years you will experience homecoming, mixers, dances, philanthropy events, Greek Week, sisterhood events, and so much more. There will be good times and not so good times. You will get become a part of what we called a diamond family. FYI: You may get the most amazing big in the entire world or you may not. When I got my big I had only met her once lol. I had no idea who she was but she helped me through so much & she is also the reason I picked my major. When I received my little, I had never met her. So you get the point, not everything goes like you think or plan. And hey, if your family sucks there always adoption 🙂 Go to EVERY, yes I said EVERY, mixer & dance. If there was anything I could redo, it was be to go to everything. 4 years will fly by so fast. Step out of your comfort zone and be apart of one of the groups for Greek Week. I had never danced a day in my life but sign up for spring sing anyways (a dance competition with a theme) and I had so much fun.

This may be inappropriate to point out but DRINKING/PARTYING IS A THING. I remember when I went to my first mixer and I was not prepared for it. I mean my friends and I drank in high school but college is another level. If you drink, be responsible. If you do not drink, that is perfectly okay too and I promise there a tons of girls who don’t either. Don’t let that turn you off to Greek Life. A lot of college kids drink, not just sorority girls and fraternity guys.

No matter what I say I could never truly explain the feeling of being apart of something that is so much bigger than yourself. So take the plunge and go through recruitment, I promise you won’t regret it.
