Breastfeeding Q&A

I just wanted to say that by no means am I an expert on breastfeeding. Being a first time mom I feel like I know nothing. I’m just sharing my experiences and what works for me! I would suggest contacting your local lactation center for help as well! ALSO, however you plan on feeding your baby whether it’s breast, formula or both, I think that is totally okay! I always said I would only use formula but changed my mind halfway through my pregnancy. As long as your baby is getting what they need, that is all that matters!

What are your favorite nursing tops?

I really love the brand Loyal Hana. They are a little pricey but to me worth the money. I feel like it’s so hard to find cute/stylish nursing tops. Loyal Hana makes breastfeeding easy and have such cute styles. Honestly, if I’m at home then I just take off everything and breastfeed that way. My little guy loves to be difficult sometimes lol and it is just easier to be clothes free!

How do you prevent soreness?

The first 3 days in the hospital breastfeeding was a breeze! I was so shocked to how easily he latched. After day 3 though my nipples got extremely sore. Like every time he latched I would scream in pain. It was rough for about a week or so but then got easier. I recommend using this nipple cream to prevent/help with soreness. They gave it to me in the hospital and it worked wonders! Also, after feeding squeeze out a little breastmilk and let it dry on your nipple then put the nipple cream on.

Do you feed on a schedule or on demand?

For the first two months (8 weeks), I nursed on demand. Now, we do every 3 hours whether its breastmilk or formula.

How long do you plan on breastfeeding?

I originally said I was only going to breastfeed while I was on maternity leave which was 6 weeks. I’ve now been doing it for 9 weeks and I definitely feel like my supply have dropped. I’ve done numerous things to help increase my supply but don’t feel like it’s made a difference. I may try to wing myself & Asher and start only formula.

Are you supplementing at all?

Yes! It took longer for my milk to come in than most women so my little guy wasn’t getting enough. We do 1-2 bottles a day depending on what our day is like. If I need a nap then he will get a bottle, just like when my fiancé gets up to feed him at night. Not to be selfish but I think supplementing some has kept me sane! Breastfeeding is so so demanding. There are moments where I’m like I just can’t do this anymore but the bond you create with your baby while nursing is indescribable! I try to pump so he can have that instead of formula but it has been impossible for me to build up a stash! Btw- we use Gerber Gentle for formula.

Biggest piece of advice you’d give to a breastfeeding mom?

Don’t give up! There will be hard days but push through. Like I mentioned before, the bond you create with your baby while breastfeeding is amazing. That is something that no other person besides you can do with your baby. I’ll be nursing, look down at my son and he will be smiling and my heart just melts!

How have you tried to increase your milk supply?

So far I’ve tried to drink as much water as possible during the day, taken supplements from Legendary Milk, eaten oatmeal, and drank tea. I don’t feel like any of it has worked for me.

Are you avoiding any foods while breastfeeding?

Anything spicy! I tried eating pizza one night and I believe it upset my little guys stomach. Also, anything acidic and clearly alcohol. Everything you eat, your baby will get through breastfeeding.

How do you manage leaving the house while breastfeeding?

If I know I’m going to be going out of the house, I’ll try to feed him before I leave! This is where supplementing comes in handy. I’m not shy about breastfeeding at all. When my MIL stayed with us, she seen it all haha. It’s a natural thing and I don’t feel the need to hide it. I haven’t breastfed in a public place yet but I will breastfeed in front of friends. So far if I’m out, I’ll just breastfeed in the car. If I’m in a store, restaurant, etc. then I’ll just give him a bottle.

How exactly do you breastfeed?

I try to do my best at letting him nurse on one breast for 15-20 minutes then switch to the other. My son falls asleep so easy while nursing so sometimes I don’t get to switch. BUT you’ll find that while you’re nursing on one breast, the other one WILL leak. I’ll try to pump one breast while he is nursing on the other so I don’t waste/lose any milk.

Do you burp after every feeding?

Yes! Sometimes he won’t burp after nursing which I believe is because your baby doesn’t inhale as much air while feeding unlike a bottle. When I bottle feed, he burps almost immediately after finishing the bottle.

What kind of bottles are you using?

We actually use several kinds because my son takes anything! Dr.Browns is my favorite so far.

How are your night feeds?

Usually my son wakes up twice throughout the night. We just started feeding him 5oz at some feedings and that seemed to help him stay full and sleep throughout the night longer. For example, last night he woke up at 2:30am and 7:00am.

Are you pumping every few hours?

I’ve tried pumping right after I nurse, getting up in the middle of the night, etc. For me, it hasn’t really made much of a difference. I still get the same amount whether I wait 3 hours vs 6 hours.
